The Book Inspired by Many...
Why I wrote the book: Before putting race relations aside, I focused on the topic and wrote the book "The Black Box" in my mid-twenties because, as a teenager, I wasn’t totally aware of how other black people lived in the present/past, so I created a record for my future descendants to know their history. Writing the book was a way for me to memorialized deceased family members and family-friends in addition to bonding with my mother before relocating (since she values education, culture and is experienced in editing.) After grieving, looking back, moving on, understanding my “why” and life purpose better, I can now work on the things that I particularly enjoy such as: studying architecture and doing things in DC with my husband/our community. I feel that black people have many similar stories/backgrounds and similar answers to general questions. So, based off of my experiences, and what other black (and even non-black) people have said about the experience, I’d like for my children to known their history from their household (not just through school, church, or independent research.) They may not have a great African American studies course, so I’d teach them the basics since my husband and I are moving with the Navy (and that could mean non-liberal schools.) The people referenced in the book at the end are some of the individuals who I discussed cultural topics through life with, and I created a consensus rather than focusing too much on specific individual stories- just general information.
